On June 28, 2007, the day of the 2007 NBA draft, the Seattle SuperSonics traded Ray Allen to the Boston Celtics.
The following July 31, 10 time all star and 2004 MVP Kevin Garnett joined the C’s from Minnesota and the new “Big 3” was formed.
That season they would go on to win the 2007-08 NBA Championship.
Fast forward to this past off season. With more hype and anticipation then any in recent memory plus “The Decision”, another “Big 3” was formed in Miami. Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and LeBron James join forces to see if they, too, can get a ring (or a second one in Wade’s case). Fans in Miami rejoiced. Fans in Cleveland did not. Fans in Toronto were indifferent (Bosh leaving the Raptors really wasn’t that big of a deal).
But hype is just hype. It means nothing and the NBA doesn’t award trophies or rings for excitement. Tonight, Miami’s Big 3 will actually have to produce on the court. And the road begins in Boston.
The NBA season starts tonight at 7:00 PM Eastern Time on TNT. And there couldn’t be a better way to tip it off then putting 6 of the biggest stars in the NBA on the same floor. Plus, mix in emerging stars Rajon Rondo and Udonis Haslem along with veteran Shaquille O’Neal and we are ready to go.
