From Rocky Mountain High School, the Mountain View Mavericks beat the Grizzlies 56-52 in a close one down to the last seconds. Even at the end of the game, when Rocky looked like they had no chance, they hung around and made it interesting.
Mountain View showed why they are at the top of the 5A Southern Idaho Conference.
Coachable. Unselfish. Smart. Patient.
A recipe for success that they unveiled last year in the state tournament. Back then they were led by all around stud Tyson Percifield. But a knee injury forced him out of the tournament and left his teammates to step up. Which they did and finished with the state title.
That same momentum has continued this season. With no dominant players (though Brandon Luedtke, Tanner Percifield and Marcus Slocum are getting closer to that title each game) they play as a true team and are reaping the benefits.
For Rocky Mountain, they remain an enigma. They have some talent. They have a couple scorers and defenders. A couple players that seem willing to do the dirty work. And Coach Roy is making some great in game adjustments. They seem so close to putting it all together.
It seems that it is maybe an identity issue. Tonight, with about 3 minutes to play and the score tied at 43, Mountain View went on a run. That is when Rocky really needs to have someone step up and be the guy to pull them together.
And that could still happen. The season is only halfway over. And as Capital showed Eagle the other night, in this league anything is possible.
