Select players grab three state titles

At the Idaho Center on Saturday, three title games featured five players from Idaho Select rosters.

In the 1A-D2 game, Sawyer Wahl was dominant for Nezperce in their game against Carey. In addition to his 20 points and 10 rebounds, Wahl set the tone early by taking three charges in the first quarter. Nezperce would get the win 47-62. Wahl averaged 17.7 points and 7 rebounds in the tournament, showing why he is a top candidate for the 1A Player of the Year.

In the 2A game, Jack Nygaard from Kamiah and Trevor Thomas from Cole Valley showed how close these two teams were matched. Nygaard was solid with 15 points and 5 rebounds. Thomas, who scored 14 points, had a knack of knowing when his team needed to hit a shot and happily stepped up and did so bringing home the title to Cole Valley.

Nygaard, a leading 2A Player of the Year candidate, finished the tournament averaging 21.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Thomas was a steady 12.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.

The night’s finale matched up the two top teams in the state with Post Falls and Seth Anderson against Borah and Cody Spjute. Post Falls struggled from the beginning on offense. And when they did start to get something going, it was usually Spjute that would hit a big shot to keep the momentum from swinging. Borah would leave with the title.
