stats for basketball coachesHere is a blog post from coach Steve Smiley (Weber State) for basketball coaches that want to analyze their team’s shot quality even if they don’t have access to a lot of statistics. A big thanks to Idaho Select coach Shelby Lindley for sending this over to us (click here to read more about Shelby).

Below we take the 150 score and compare the six colleges in Idaho. And we added in their opponent’s score as well to see if there was a correlation to wins and losses. Obviously the better your score, the better chance you have at winning.

Now take a closer look at the margins.

A score of 150 for a college team is kind of the target. However, with the exception of the opponents free throw percentage, a team can also affect the other team’s score. So the College of Idaho, with a score of 148, is still having a lot of success because they are holding their opponents under 140. If a coach is looking for a way to help quantify the importance of defense, this kind of measurement can help.

So what do you think? Is this a helpful way to analyze your team? Does it apply to the high school or AAU level? Do these stats for coaches help?
