Teams Continue Great Run At Las Vegas Basketball Tournament

The end of the July recruiting period went incredibly well for Idaho Select teams, continuing a run of success that started three weeks earlier.

Competing in the Las Vegas basketball tournament, the Fab 48, all five Idaho Select teams had their share of success.

The 17U team made it to another Final Four in the Diamond Championship Bracket. After going 3-0 to win their pool, they would get three more tournament wins before losing to the eventual tournament champions and finish the Las Vegas basketball trip with a 6-1 record. For the Spring and the Summer tournaments, the Anthony Davis Select team finished with a 28-6 record including 5 trips to the Final Four and 1 appearance in the championship game. They had the privilege of playing in front of hundreds of college coaches and really helped build the respect for the Idaho Select program.

During and following the week of Las Vegas basketball, Stefan Gonzalez picked up offers from the University of Montana, Portland State and Seattle University. Those go along with his offers to Eastern Washington, Idaho State and UC Davis.

White 17U

The White team finished 2-1 in their pool and qualified for the Championship Bracket in the Gold Division. They got 2 tournament game wins but their Las Vegas basketball run came to an end in the quarter finals, losing to Seattle Swish who would go on to win the Gold title.

The White team finished 11-4 for the summer.

Red and Blue 16U

It was great to see the 16U teams all develop their players as the summer progressed. Various guys had big moments in different games during their Las Vegas basketball journey. Both teams competed in the Diamond Division and qualified for the Championship bracket.

The Red team won their pool with a 3-0 record and then got an opening round win. They finished the tournament at 4-1 and finished the summer 11-4.

The Blue team went 2-1 in pool play and then won two games in the tournament. They finished with a 4-2 record in Las Vegas and an overall record of 11-5.

Gold 15U

The 15U team finished 1-2 in pool play after a couple of close losses. But they rebounded strong to get an opening round win in the tournament. They finished their Las Vegas Basketball run at 2-3 and finished the summer at 7-7.

Beyond the court

Clearly, the Idaho Select program as a whole had one of the more successful summers in the program’s history. With a 57-23 overall record in July, it would be tough to find another program, top to bottom, that saw this much success. We are so proud of our players for how hard they played, how well they let themselves be coached and their ability to dig deep when games got tough.

Additionally, the guys got a chance to have a lot of fun off the court. Whether it was playing some beach volleyball, hitting the bowling alley, checking out the NBA Summer League and even getting the chance to be a part of a Nike focus group, the teams and players had the chance to do more than just play basketball.

Even though July has come to an end, our guys know there is still a lot of work ahead of them. Skill development in the off season is boring. But it is the best time to fix gaps in your game. At some point this summer all of our guys found areas that they need to work on and the next few months will be the time to improve.

And please consider one last opportunity to play and have fun this August 9-10 in Boise at Idaho’s biggest 3 on 3 basketball tournament, Fast Eddy’s BAM Jam! It is a fantastic tournament on the streets of downtown Boise and brings in high school players from all over the northwest. It is also the single biggest fundraiser for the Idaho Select Player’s Fund. Did you know that 1 out of 6 players in the Idaho Select program needs and depends on financial assistance from the Idaho Select Player’s Fund? BAM Jam is a great way to have fun and help out great kids!
